This focused issue on “Surgical Endoscopy: Essential Skills in Gastrointestinal Surgery” is edited by Dr. Jeffrey M. Marks and Dr. Ryan M. Juza, from Department of Surgery, University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center, Cleveland, OH, USA.
Dr. Jeffrey M. Marks joined the Department of Surgery at University Hospitals Case Medical Center in 2005. He is Program Director for the Case General Surgery Program, associate director of the Surgical Endoscopy Fellowship, and attained the rank of Professor of Surgery in 2012. In addition to clinical practice in minimally invasive surgery and advanced therapeutic endoscopy, Dr. Marks runs an active animal lab researching numerous endoscopic techniques and providing endoscopic training courses for surgeons, gastroenterologists, and allied health care.
Dr. Ryan M. Juza is a certified in endoscopic surgery, laparoscopic surgery and advanced trauma and life support. His research interests include abdominal wall reconstruction, advanced laparoscopic and endoscopic surgery, surgical innovation and instrument development. He has lectured on the topic of endoscopic therapies in post-surgical anatomy and on abdominal wall anatomy and CT imaging in hernia patients.
This issue aims to discuss comprehensive and essential skills for endoscopic surgeons. It highlights the many primary and secondary flexible endoscopic procedures that surgeons must be aware of and adept at their performance.
