Alberto Montori, MD, FACS (Hon), FASGE, FRSM

Graduated in Medicine in February 1960, in the same year Dr. Montori finished his military service in the Army. As Chairman and Professor of Surgery at the University of Roma “La Sapienza” and Director of the Post-Graduate Course on Digestive Surgery and Therapeutic Endoscopic Surgery, Dr. Montori is now Emeritus Professor of Surgery at the same University. 

Dr. Montori plays an active role in many international organizations, including being the current President of the European Academy of Surgical Sciences (EAcSS), Chairman of the OMED Minimally Invasive Surgery Committee, Member of the Board of Reviewers for scientific research for Italian Ministry of Education-University and Research; Member of the Research Committee of Rome University, Councillor of the International Digestive Cancer Alliance (IDCA), Treasurer of the Mediterranean Task Force for Cancer Control (MTCC), and Treasurer of the International Association for Advance of Digestive Endoscopy, Co-Chairman of the European Study Group for NOTES, Councillor of IFSES (INTERNATIONAL FEDERATION of SOCIETIES of ENDOSCOPIC SURGERY), Secretary General and President of the Italian Society of Digestive Endoscopy (SIED), President of the Italian Society for Endoscopic Surgery and Minimally Invasive Surgery (SICE), Vice-President of Roman Society of Surgery (RSS), Vice-President of the Italian Society of Surgery (SIC), Member of International Society of Digestive Surgery (ISDS), Member of the International Pelvic Floor Dysfunction Society, of the Italian Surgical Society, of the Italian Society of Minimally invasive Surgery, Councillor of the International Federation of Societies of Endoscopic Surgery (IFSES), Fellow of the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (EASGE), Councillor of International digestive Cancer Alliance (IDCA), Member of the International Society of University Colon and Rectal Surgeons, Fellow of the American Society of Colon- rectal Surgery. 

During term as President of the Italian Chapter of the American College of Surgeons and Governor at Large For Italy of the American College of Surgeons for 7 years,  as Governor he imported to Italy the ATLS Programme which was extremely useful to have access to the Emergency care. In the University “La Sapienza”, together with the Universities of Turin and The Catholic (University) of Roma, 80 Instructors and 25 Directors were trained.500 Courses have been organized with a total of 5000 Participants. 

Dr. Montori has played a key leadership role in many Academic and Professional Surgical and Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Organizations at home and abroad, where he has received many Honours and Awards, like the SAGES 2016 George Berci lifetime achievement Award, the Dean’s Medal of the Thomas Jefferson Medical School of Philadelphia and the Dean’s Medal of the Roma University “La Sapienza”, etc.

He has also hold presidency in numerous associations, including President of the 6th World Congress of Endoscopic Surgery Rome 1998, President of the Organizing Committee of the 3rd Italian Surgical Week Rome 2000, President of the 1st Global Campaign for the prevention of Cancer of Digestive Organs Rome 2002, Honorary President of the 8th International Congress of the European Association for Endoscopic Surgery Nice 2000, etc.

Except active role in these organizations, Dr. Montori was Editor-in-Chief of the OMED Newsletter, Senior Editor of the World Gastroenterology News, Member of the Editorial Board of Surgical Endoscopy, Endoscopy, Digestive Endoscopy, Annals of Laparoscopic and Endoscopic Surgery. He was Correspondent Member of the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE), Annali Italiani di Chirurgia, La Chirurgia Gastroenterologica  edited by G. Grassi in 1967  and many other Italian and International Scientific Journals. 

Dr. Montori has authored nearly 500 Publications including 13 Surgical Books and Monographs., 18 Videos and films presented in many surgical meetings (SAGES, EAES, SICE, LIBRERIES).

In the clinical practice he has performed more than 35000 surgical procedures  (traditional, MIS and endovisceral endoscopic surgery) and Chaired the Workshop on Integrated endo-surgical platform: the Operating Room of the future and the Endoscopic Natural Orifice Surgery (NOTES)- Barcelona February 2007.
