Masahiko Watanabe, MD, PhD, FACS, FASCRS

Graduated from Keio University School of Medicine in 1979, Professor Masahiko Watanabe started his career in Department of Surgery in the renowned Keio University Hospital. In 1992, Professor Watanabe operated the first case of laparoscopic surgery for colorectal cancer in Japan, paving the road to establish minimally invasive surgery in the country. In 2004, he became a professor and chair of Department of Surgery, Kitasato University School of Medicine. He specializes in the treatment of colorectal cancer, and his laparoscopic surgery has gained the acclaim worldwide.

Professor Watanabe now contributes to numerous societies at home and overseas. He has been appointed the president of Japanese Society for Endoscopic Surgery, a vice president of Japan Surgical Society, and a councilor of Japanese Gastroenterological Surgery.

He has been leading the scene ever since and working on educating younger generation at the same time.
